Over the past decade, I’ve witnessed firsthand the incredible power of community and its ability to create real, lasting change. Through Layups 4 Life, the non-profit I started to raise funds for cancer research and clinical trials, I’ve come to understand just how transformative collective action can be. What began as a simple idea to make a difference has grown into a movement that has rallied countless people together for a cause that touches so many lives.

When Layups 4 Life held its very first fundraising event, we chose to start right here at Roxbury High School. I wanted to begin with the community that shaped me, the place where I grew up, and where I learned the values of teamwork and perseverance. From that first event until today, the support has been nothing short of remarkable. Year after year, we’ve seen hundreds of participants come together to play basketball, compete, and have fun—all while raising crucial funds for cancer research. Our annual tournament and other events have become not just fundraisers, but celebrations of hope, determination, and the collective will to fight back against a disease that affects so many.

It’s this spirit of togetherness that fuels everything we do at Layups 4 Life.
